So I know I have some issues with my coolant system.
I have purchased replacement radiator, water pump, and
thermostat. I figure those three components should
cover just about any major problem in the coolant
system.
The radiator is the original one and has a crack in
it. I know this part must be replaced. But there are
other issues with the coolant that I'm not sure can be
blamed on the radiator. I've been losing coolant at
random times. It will be at a normal level for 3 days
then all the sudden the reservoir is dry and I have
the typical problems(heater loses heat at idle and the
engine temp rises above normal).
So I pop the hood today after driving for about 45
minutes to check the coolant level and add a touch of
engine oil(to the engine). Well the reservoir was
boiling over. I assume it was boiling over as coolant
was draining out of the drain tube that leads from the
res cap out. I'm not sure if that means there's too
much pressure in the system or that the coolant is
boiling. I'm using a 70/30 mix. There was a wetness
around the crack in the radiator, but nothing out of
the ordinary.
Could a crack in the radiator cause this? The water
pump and therm are less than a year old. I got new
ones cause there is a lifetime warranty on them. I'm
not really excited about having to swap water pumps.
It's a PITA getting the timing belt back on.
The only other thing I can think of was when I did the
2G tranny swap into my 95, near the end of the install
I had hooked the rear heater hoses back up and then
remembered that I had forgotten to do something to the
top of the tranny. So I let the tranny dangle(meaning
the tranny mount is gone and all the weight of the
powertrain is on the engine mount, so the tranny
droops way down, making access to the top of it much
easier). Well I thought about it afterwards, the
heater hoses up[ there are metal tubes. So they could
have gotten bent doing what I did. But the heater
worked and everything seemed to function fine. It was
shortly there after I noticed the crack in the
radiator.
I'm sorry for the long post, but I wanted to cram in
the details. Basically the question is could a crack
in a radiator cause the res to boil over or is there
another problem?
Thanks,
Mike
