"No top end power" is normal? I don't know which engine you have, but the top end is where all the horsepower is supposed to be on these.
The black smoke is incompletely burned fuel. Your engine is running too rich, probably have issues with one or more Oxygen sensors. You also probably have a check engine light lit, or at least it might have been lit until it burnt out, eh? You're going to have to find out why its running so rich; it's costing you gas money and polluting badly.
