98 ES with approx 140K miles. The A/C on my Trep stopped blowing cool a few months ago and with the onset of hot weather, it was time to have it checked again. Also, my two rear windows would not work. The left side has been intermittent since a body shop replaced the door in 2001 and suddenly the right rear window just stopped working all together. With no A/C and no way to roll down the rear windows made for an uncomfortable drive.
So I scheduled service work at the nearby Dodge dealer, mostly to have the window lifts looked at. Since I had moved to Florida, this was the first time I had scheduled any work through a dealer. Today, they call me and say they have recharged the A/C and put a dye in the line so they can trace the leak if it happens again. This dye is sensitive to ultaviolet light, so they can see it through the road grime. No problem on this, it works now. The windows? Dealer said the regulators were out on both windows. $270 for the left rear and $250 for the right rear.(!?!) I asked him to inspect the wiring harness to make sure it was snapped in all the way. They would only say the regulators were bad and that the parts would have to come in from Orlando. I didn't like their response. They wouldn't admit what they actually checked and looked at. I declined the window service. The service manager wanted me to stop by when I picked up the vehicle and chat about the windows. I came by to pick up, he wasn't around, so I asked the service assistant why didn't they check the wiring harness? He didn't answer me, he just went on about how the regulators get dirty and they tend to foul over time and keeps the windows from lifting. (My problem wasn't lifting, just making it work period) With that unsatisfactory answer, I get in and drive away out of the service bay...BUT...as I do, for grins I hit the rear window lift buttons and VOILA!! they work! I checked again and again, they both work now. How could the regulators (which are in the door) be bad when I clearly see them working coming off the service bay? Wiring harness, karma or pixie dust? We will never really know......but my rear windows work now and a dealer did not get my $520. Dealer scam? Hard to say. The evasiveness to my wiring harness questions makes me believe something was amiss, especially the SM wanting to "discuss" it with me after I declined. I had made mention to them when I dropped it off that I had just moved to town and this was my first visit. Part of me wants to think that the "replace the part, regardless of the issue" mentality was at work here and no one really wanted to take any time to diagnose. Just replace any part to make it work. Either way, they had to detach the harness to get the door panel down and they did that on both doors. Both windows work now. ------------------------ Yahoo!
