I recently had to say farewell (sort of) to my 1997 Intrepid ES. Last
October, I had a rebuilt rack and pinion put on it, then had several
problems with it (and the dimwits who installed it). Figured I had it all
fixed up until a few weeks ago when the steering started vibrating and
drifting. I assumed it was the same part again, but the dealer told me it
was inner tie rod and lower arm assemblies that needed replacing. Whether
true or not, they also told me the motor and transmission mounts need to be
replaced. The total bill was to be $1,900.

I had planned to buy my first brand new car this coming November, but
decided to move that up and went with the 2005 Jeep Liberty. Not quite as
good gas mileage or ride, but fun to drive. (Nice to know it was built in
Toledo!)

The Intrepid was definitely my favorite of all the used cars I've had.
Bought it in almost new condition in 1999. Besides the steering, it's in
excellent condition. The body looks like new, except a small wrinkle in the
rear passenger door where I had a hit and run dent pulled out. Since I am
single, the interior still looks like new, too. With 165k, the engine and
transmission are still humming along, averaging about 22 MPG, mostly
highway. One annoying thing for several years has been the airbag light,
since I never replaced the spring. This is definitely one long, low, roomy
sedan! I didn't like the dealer's trade-in offer, so I kept it. I plan to
have it detailed next week and get a better price for it.

Needless to say, I will probably leave the group shortly. The discussions
have been very useful. Thanks to everyone who made it interesting and
answered the few questions I put out there.

Joe
