Obviously it's a connection issue somewhere, the question is where.

There is a light socket, which screws into the back of the headlamp
housing. There is a pigtail coming off of that with a plug that
connects to the harness. That plug might be responsible, but it seems
more likely to me that the socket is responsible -- corrosion or a
poorly seated bulb would be culprits. Another possibility is the
filament in the bulb itself is loose, and smacking it is causing it to
hit one of the terminating points and (weakly) weld itself back into
place.

When you get funky stuff like this, it's best to take everything
apart, clean it, and replace the bulbs with new. Try to duplicate the
problem when you have the headlamp/socket assembly removed from the
housing and make sure you don't have a bad wire. Don't touch the
bulb! It's extremely hot, and the oil from your fingers will cause it
to self destruct.

If you have access problems, remove the entire headlamp assembly. Two
TorX "jack screws" hold it into the radiator support. I think they're
T-25.
