The 2.7 is said by the pro wrenches I've talked to to be a well-designed motor (excellent power for its displacement, reliable) that doesn't tolerate poor maintenance. My parents recently purchased an '04 Sebring new, and it came with a book of coupons for free oil changes for the life of the car. Tells you something. Personally, I wouldn't have one, I disagree with the pros on how good the design of the motor is.
There were two generations of Intrepid and LH cars in general. 1st generation was model years 1993 - 1997. Second generation was 1998 - 2004. 1993-7 cars could be had with a 3.3L or a 3.5L engine. 1998-2001 had the 2.7 and 3.2. For 2000, the R/T model got the H.O. 3.5L. For 2002, the 3.2L was dropped, and a low output 3.5L was substituted. (You could still get the H.O. version in the R/T, as well as the SXT.) The 2.7L carried on right up until the end in 2004. The 3.2L was only ever used in the LH series, as far as I'm aware, unless it found its way into other vehicles for export, which is possible. The U.S.-spec Stratus hasn't ever come with a 3.2L; 2.4L 4-cylinders, as well as 2.5L, 2.7L and 3.0L V6s are the only ones I know about for certain. There _may_ have been a 2.0L 4-cyl option in the early years as well. I'm pretty sure the only passenger car the 3.8L was ever available in was the AC-body car, the Dynasty/New Yorker series that was replaced by the LH cars. This engine was not nearly as powerful as the version going into minivans today is, but it shared a common design in certain respects with the 3.5L iron block engine in the 1st generation LH cars. Would a 3.8L fit into an Intrepid? Maybe, but it certainly never came from the factory that way. Incidently, the Prowler was an LH-derivative car; it used the 3.5L engines from both generations of LH platforms with a "torque tube" in place of the drive shaft which ran at engine speed, driving a rear-mounted transaxle. Apparently this was considered as a possible direction for the Intrepid to take as well, but the Daimler takeover changed those plans. The 254-HP 3.5L found in the 2nd generation Intrepid R/T and SXT is the most powerful one you'll find from the factory.
