The steering rack bushing problem is common on the LH
cars. Are there any recalls for this issue?
What happens is that when you turn the wheel, the rack
shifts instead of the wheels, so you will get a lot of
"play" in the steering and the car will wander around
your lane on the highway.
I can't remember off the top of my head the design of
it, but if they had any brains in the world, they
would design it so that even if the rubber bushings
were completely removed, the steering will never
completely fail. Just like an engine mount or rubber
suspension bushing--if it totally wears out, its still
impossible for something very nasty to go wrong.
I am unfamiliar with the cradle bushings, but I
imagine its the exact same deal. The rubber is there
for vibration absorbsion (is that a word?) and
refinement. They are really not necessary.
I wouldn't loose any sleep over it, but yea I'd get it
fixed. Its all labor costs. Thats why american jobs
are being outsourced.
