The brake calipers are NOT fixed. They are supposed to
slide back and forth on the "pins" they are mounted
on. They feel like they are fixed but if you were to
push the caliper piston(s) back into it, the brake
pads would be loose and you will notice the caliper's
ability to slide back and forth. At least it should.
This is a properly operating caliper.

This noise is not a brake caliper noise. The pins
they ride on will, in time, wear out and become loose.
When this happens it still does not make the
crunching noise that was described. They make a TICK
noise when you apply them, if any noise at all.

Its probably a sway bar bushing or strut bearing.
Either way, thumbs up to trying another mechanic.

Speaking of mechanics, I have another sick 2.7 here
with 127,000 miles. It is no surprise that this one
also failed because the idiot who pulled the oil pan
(for whatever reason) did not use a gasket to re-seal
it! Just RTV. This is a HUGE no-no because that
gasket is what seals the oil pressure going through
the filter! The RTV blew, no more oil pressure! Plus,
the thickness of the gasket is what keeps the pan away
from the pickup tube! I am so glad I have the
automobile fixing gene.
