Other motors (3.2L, 3.5L) are better because they do not rely on oil
pressure to maintain the tension on the drive mechanism for the valvetrain.

Neglect and poor quality oil take a toll quickly on the 2.7L, causing a
variety of issues. One of them is catastrophic failure due to failure of
the timing chain(s) tensioner(s) (could be one or both), which causes severe
valvetrain and piston damage, essentially requiring a rebuild. I have
personally observed Chrysler and Dodge dealerships in my area stockpiling
replacement 2.7 engines, and the cost of replacement engines from the
junkyard is higher due to increased demand.

Simply put, I would NOT advise purchasing any car with a 2.7L unless its
complete service history can be established via a paper trail. You will be
much further ahead seeking out a 3.2L or 3.5L powered vehicle. They may be
slightly more expensive (possibly) but any economy you gain by going with a
2.7L would be immediately wiped out should you experience a failure.

You should expect to change the timing belt, water pump, and tensioner
pulley on any 3.2L or 3.5L you acquire that has in excess of 105K miles,
incidently.
