Right on Geoff ....  the trep's lighting is poor to begin with and 
you don't want to diminish it at all.  Good lighting at night is 
essential for safe driving.  I had a 93 Grand Cherokee but the 
lighting was very bad on it as well.  Tried 100 W bulbs but it 
didn't help.  It was the lens - there was lots of frontal but the 
lens was just a poor design.  The intrepid is even worse.  I didn't 
even bother with higher wattage bulbs because the frontal area of 
the lens is very small.  With hella bulbs in my 1981 round headlight 
BMW320i you could see for miles!!
