Hi Jordan, or is it Scotty?
Performance is all about power to weight. Since the power part is more
expensive, attack the weight part first by removing all the junk you might
be carrying around in the trunk.
Then lift out that spare tire & wheel, and consider how much it weighs.
Balance that against the inconvenience you will have when you need it & it
is at home. For example, my 95 only needed the spare twice in the more
than quarter million miles it has gone since new.
Fuel weighs 6 lbs per gallon, and you have an 18 gallon tank. Since most
trips are short, put a gallon in when you need a gallon, and save 102 lbs
of weight right there. Your fuel pump will not last as long without the
cooling effect of the fuel, but what is a few parts when you are looking
for performance?
Then think of what else you can remove to lessen weight. Serious drag
racers remove most all of the interior, replace the stock driver's seat
with a lightweight racing unit, then go on to chemically mill body panels.
Do you really need a back seat? Do you want performance bad enough to do
without comfort?
Do you have the infinity sound system? There is a several pound amplifier
in the trunk, and many more pounds of speakers.
At some point you might decide you have lost most of what you like about
the car.
So that brings us to the power side. Are you sure you have all the power
that was engineered into the engine when it was new? Start by checking
compression, look for losses in accessories with worn bearings. Change to
a synthetic oil. Verify that your cat is not clogged.
The stock muffler flows quite well, but it is heavy, and what's a little
noise when you are after performance? There goes another 20 lbs.
There is a restrictor in the intake system, designed to lessen the intake
roar on acceleration. I kinda like that sound. Replace the stock filter
element with a lower loss K&N element.
Be sure your injectors are clean, and have a good pattern. Install new
wires & fresh plugs.
Then be sure your transmission is sound, and has the correct level of
fresh, proper fluid.
If that is not enough performance, it is time to get serious with the heavy
dollar things. But first - your air conditioning system weighs quite a few
pounds. How about removing that compressor, condenser, dryer, evaporator &
fan. Take that heater core too.
Now off to the fun things. You need more power, and that air conditioning
compressor is gone so you have a nice place to install an aftermarket
supercharger. That would be a real kick in the pants.
Or go all the way to turbocharging. You now have space under the dash, and
can fashion a heat shield for the passenger's feet. Or do you have a
passenger seat any more?
At this point you will need some time to get used to torque steering. But
oh what fun it would be!
Check allpar.com for specs on your engine. A later version of the 3.5,
with aluminum block, has 250 HP @ 6600 rpm, 250 lb-ft @ 3900, 9.9:1
compression.
Keep the list up to date on your project.

Hello guys, My name is Jordan and I am the proud owner of a 1994
Intrepid. I have had no complaints about the car yet, hopefully I wont.
I do have a couple questions about the car as I have only had the car a
month. It is abou the performance of the car. Does anyone know the base
HP/torque on the 3.5L? And also where can I go to get a few more horses
under the hood? Sorry if this is a repeat question but again I am new
to the group.
