Hi all, newbie here. Anyway, on this past Monday, I had a strange
occurance with my 98 ES. I was going out to run an errand, and upon
starting the car, it sputtered, the check engine light came on, and
then it died. Upon trying to start it again, it would not crank at
all. I opened up the hood, and heard a clicking noise coming from
under the cover of the relay center. I removed the cover, and one of
the modules (I forget which one at the moment) was making the clicking
noise, as if it was operating, but the car was turned off. It was not
the battery, as I had the two truck driver try to jump it. My
mechcanic was puzzeled as well. He took a look at the relay center and
tried to start the car from there, to no avail, although he did get it
to crank. He then looked at the ignition switch in the column, and did
some fooling around in there, and did get the car to run again (as it
has since, with on inicident where it acted wacky, but I was able to
start it)though he confesses he didn't really fix anything. His
feeling is that it is probably something in the computer, perhaps
something in the factory alarm system that is disengaging the starter.
A guy at work says it sounds like a bad starter solenoid. Any ideas?
Sorry about the long post!
