Sounds like your coolant is low. I used to have that problem all the time before i replaced my head gaskets. I'd fill it up and within a months time it would be low enough to where I would lose heat if the car was sitting still. Your problem might not be a head gasket, but it definitely sounds like low coolant. I'd check that first. If you notice the cooling system loosing it's coolant quickly then you might want to start looking for a leak.
