Hi Rob,

That would be my opinion. If they rattle when u taxi over rough ground,
certainly the case

The new bearing brackets seem to be made from Stainless and I think that if
they are bolted to the wooden bracket instead of being pop rivet’d that could
provide enough adjustment to make the bearings firmer on the rod.

The new bearings are smoother than rubbing vaseline on a babys bum.

Does that mean the pushrods had a lot of sideways play due to the bearings
being set too wide apart at manufacture?

Hi Ian,

    A couple of questions...

Was the play in the pushrods caused by the outer nylon wearing down by the
rubbing of the pushrods?

No, though there was a little evidence of rubbing. The A/C has only 1500hrs
TT. The pushrods were just plain loose in the bearings

What state were the pushrods in as a result of the seized bearings?

No damage.

All the bearings were affected. Some showed moisture damage as well

cheers

Hi all you dimona devotees

Im not sure that this message will get to you all but here goes ....

I am currently getting an Ex Thai Dimona into the air for Dave McMillan who is
in Greymouth New Zealand.

It has been subjected to a reasonably corrosive environment while in storage
over here, and it was the machine which Nigel was referring to regarding the
pop rivet heads popping off the aileron hinges (maybe a dodgy Thai repair)
because of corrosion.

However I have found another issue which is really interesting. Inside the
wings, the aileron push rods have 5 bearing sets (the manual says 3) Each set
consists of 3 bearings pointing to the centre of the rod, and are all mounted
in on a bracket which is rivet’d to a plywood bracket (with a hole in the
centre for the tube of course) That ply bracket is then glassed on to the
inside skin with 2 fiberglass “flanges” (hope I have explained that OK)

The plot then thickens ..... I was concerned that there seemed to be quite a
lot of “play” in the push rods, so cut a 110mm hole above the last “bearing
bracket” close to the aileron bell crank to check the bearing. I found that
all 3 bearings were almost impossible to move. Close inspection revealed that
the bearing “outer” was actually the nylon roller and the balls of the bearing
had pushed dents into the nylon ..... preventing free rotation.

So ... after all 10 holes were cut, I found all 30 bearings in the same state.

10 new bearing sets were ordered from Hawkers (Now the Diamond agents over
here) (at great cost) The new bearing sets have stainless brackets and the
bearings are modified .....now have steel outers and a thinner nylon outer
outer. They are REAL smooth.

I have cut a 10mm hole above the bearing and will have to remove the wooden
holder and reglass back in, Nigel thinks a better way would be to drill the
hole (or holes alongside the brackets) ... it u do that bear in mind the
fibreglass flange in the wooden bracket is about 1.5 inches wide (3 inches for
both) but some brackets seemed only to have one flange.

Best regards

Ian Williams

Come to think of it Patch.

There is a List called SOG (Stemme Operators Group)

And us in DOG.

What would a G109 group be.

Of Course GOG.

Oh my GOG I've probably given Russell idea's now.

Exactly Patch. Otherwise we will have to start sacrificing Gilder Pilots.
Starting with Macca and then Russell White who replied likewise to my mail but
on another list.

Nige.

P.S.

Patch you better keep it quiet you are turning up in a G109 GUM or else you'll
be seen as a turncoat.

This is the "Dimona" Operators Group after all.
