I am wondering where other in line fuel filter is fitted in h36s. Ours came from Germany and is an inline car type which is just behind the panel at rear of storage just on the LH side of aircraft just behind the panel. Thus it can be removed and replaced. For the past 4 years we have been using avgas which did grey the oil but zero fuel quality problems. Mobil have pulled avgas at gold coast so we have changed to 98 and from past experienced with dirty fuel am a little more concerned. Personally I prefer the Gascolator in the line which either has fuel drain (Ximango, Jabiru fakle) or glass bowl (std in all Falkes). I prefer the course filtering of gascolator rather than paper in line filter. So my preferred system would be gascolator mounted where present in line is fitted and then add extension to underside of fuse near trailing edge. This would be in addition to the drain on well of tank. What do others think and what do you have?
Second Q is fuels. For some time now I have been using a blend of 20% avgas and 80% 98 in L2000 in falke and that would be my preferred fuel tetra ethyl Lead at 20% is all that is needed for valve lubrication etc. Thus with no more Avgas locally (BP have banned their little fuel trucks from deliveried on the road - for airport use only) now we must use full 98 - Personally I would like the lead replacement additive as sold at all service stations for older leaded engines. I realise Limbach etc say you can use 98 etc in the engines but remember the quality of German fuel is much better we get in AUS. I could go into many examples. The thing that goes wrong in our engines with mote than usual full power than in car installation is valve guides and enough people tell me the lead replacement seems to work OK. Last times the head overhaul man said " next time the valve guides will need redoing". There is an interesting fuel article on Jabiru site (think it is serv bul 7 or 9) and includes 10% ethanol (not 20% ROH) Finally those with L2400 etc will find oil filter Fleetguard LF 3826 fits as a perfect replacement for Mann Z77 filter from Germany. Ryco equ for VW transporter is slightly taller and makes it hard to get the filter on an off with the engine mount in the wayinh36 . Ian McPhee
