Another cause/solution.... Sometimes the spoilers are sitting very slightly too low in the box. This can be caused for example by by too much sanding after a repaint or fibreglass warping. As Michael said, they move back slightly before moving up and jam. This can be fixed by gluing small blocks at either end of the box so that the brakes can not sit too low.
The problem can be simulated on the ground whilst you are opening them by getting a second person to spread their fingertips evenly along the top surface of the brake and applying rearwards pressure using the friction of the fingertips with not much downwards pressure. The brake moves very slightly back as it starts to open and under certain conditions it can catch and jam. This only happened on my Dimona after 20 years when we had moved to Australia. The cure is very simple - clear the gap between the back of the airbrake and the wing by either filing (or rubbing with sandpaper) a very small amount from the back of the airbrake and/or scraping any excess paint or dirt from the recess in the wing where the brake fits when it is retracted. I was very surprised as my brakes would simply not open, but after a minute or two of sanding with emery paper the problem was completely cured! My flying club is Akaflieg Hannover (www.akaflieg-hannover.de). A year ago we purchased a H36 Dimona with Limbach 2000. Now the following occurs from time to time: The airbrakes won't deploy and seem locked in the retracted postion, no matter how hard you pull the lever. Usually, they finally do come after a few tries. Strangely it never happens on the ground, so it's not something you can detect during preflight. Anyone experienced this before? Any cures?
