Hi John, Ian and Bob, I hope that you are all well. Many thanks for the detailed information as its much appreciated.
We are fortunate in that we have the complete GIX airframe and that the only major damage was limited to the rear fuselage. We are able to use the complete engine and fittings from the firewall forward. Yes Ian it has the BT blades and we have same on GYT. I had a look at the front end of GIX yesterday following your posts. The only mods to the cowl that I can see are the extraction cowling which is quite large compared with GYT's and the cutout for the access to the oil filter, and as Ian said, even with this cutout it looks like it will be awkward to change the filter. Cant see any sign of the lower cowl area being removable though John. John C or Bob might be able to advise being past owners of GIX I did contact John Callahan Bob and he has been most helpful. Unfortunately he thinks that he didnt keep paperwork related to the L2400 mod after he sold GIX. I'll see if I can make contact with Dave Goldsmith. Good to know that there is one in Oz still flying, thanks John and we'll be certain to make contact with Dennis Stacey once we have sourced the info that we need. When I asked for information from Limbach I must congratulate Gerlinde Limbach for promptly forwarding me both the installation manual for the l2400 in the Dimona and the operating manual. Ian I've spent some time on EASA website yesterday and today and although i can find the engine type certificate for the L2400 i cant find any reference to the Dimona. The German doc you posted is maybe what I need but poor old Google Translator wasnt quite up to the task. Thanks again for the info and pics guys. Will keep you up to date. Ian i agree about operating temps. I always reduce the rpm to less than the 3000 as soon as I have safety height. You would need to comply with all of the requirements of the Mod, but I don’t think there are any structural differences, I seem to remember the air extraction cowling beneath the engine is slightly different & the fuse shell is modified so that the front part beneath the propeller is removable. This is a useful mod as it makes engine removal & maintenance much easier. I think Macca may have done it to the H-36 fitted with the Sauer conversion. Dave Goldsmith’s H36 Korff 2400 is based at Bacchus Marsh. You could also go local with the conversion and get a CAR 35 engineer (or whatever CASA calls them today) to develop the mod for you, but I would think this would be more expensive. Dafydd Llewellyn did the Sauer work as I recall & Mike Burns has done a couple of Jabiru conversions into Falkes, so maybe you could discuss it with them, but I suspect the better way would be to use the Korff mod. It would also be worthwhile to discuss your plans with Dennis Stacey to keep him in the loop as he will have final say as to any conditions you need to fulfil with the mod. Hope this helps Regards JGV From:[email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Laurie Hoffman Sent: Saturday, 1 December 2012 10:05 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [DOG mailing list] European Type Certificate Hi All, Rob and I bought the wreck of GIX, mainly because it has an L2400 (installed in Europe by Korff). The plan is to replace the L2000 in GYT with the L2400. I've finally been able to speak with Korff and they advise that there is no applicable STC as I anticipated but that a European Type Certificate applies. They are happy to sell us that but were uncertain as to whether the European TC is acceptable to GFA. John Viney do you or anyone else on the list know? Also, is this our only option for formalising the L2400 installation? We have the GIX aircraft logbooks with the Korff stamp and entries re the original installation in The Netherlands but no other relevant paperwork. Regards Laurie Hoffman
