Macka,

I have a leaking compass at the moment in the Taifun OFM. (Our Fun Machine)

It seems to be the standard type mounted on the canopy bow, and like most of
the GA installed units.

How much for the kit.

I assume it is for “O” rings etc.

It still works as it should but is creating a mess as it leaks.

Regards Bob Wilson

Subject: [DOG mailing list] Compass fluid

You can always learn from a kiwi glider pilot.

For 20 yrs now the kiwis use Johnson baby oil to fill compasses.

When you think about it, it is harmless to skin, odourless guess slightly
thicker but this is better for gliders turning in thermals.

And it comes with 20yrs of service life in NZ. I like it.

I have a few compass kits if needed.

While going a visiting MG smelt of fumes when I had a flight. CO sender was
black. We chased it down to cabin heater (now totally gone) or maybe vent air.
Pilot then told me passenger was sick & pilot did not feel his normal self. I
asked a friend anthesistic doctor & he reported high levels of CO can remain in
your system for 3 weeks after exposure. The owner was ex airline pilot becoming
vague & can't smell these days.

That is the second time CO sender has been black in 12 months that owner was
blaming water on sender. It was a gapping hole in wheel well of a one wheel
falke.
