Just a small (but very important) correction on Russell's post re electronic
ignition. Electronic ignition systems fitted to Limbach & similar have no
facility to RETARD the ignition for starting purposes. They are fixed at
FULL ADVANCE, thus the engine will kick backwards if an attempt is made to
start on electronic alone. If the mag goes down during flight the electronic
system will get you home, but for starting you need the magneto.

Just correcting a typo...impulse coupling retards the spark so it happens
just after top dead centre. Otherwise, like Nigel said dire consequences of
a piston wanting to go in two directions at once.
