All,
We had a similar situation at Mount Beauty about 15 years ago. An IS 28 stalled and went into the trees on top of a ridge. It was held hanging vertical by the tail plane. The canopy was smashed. The pilot and the young boy pax simply undid their harness and stepped onto a huge branch next to the cockpit. At that stage there were no injuries except for a few scratches on their face. The young fellow got the jitters and jumped to the ground which was just a bit too far, probably 25-30 ft up. Broke his arm. We took a tow rope up with us to the site, having first sighted the glider in the tree, and first on site, and somehow got it over a branch above the pilot and made a safety harness to hold/tie him in the tree, because he was woozy, and close to faint. Then the ses arrived and hour and half later we had the pilot down in a stretcher for the very steep decent to the roadway below. They cut the huge tree down to get the glider down as they were worried it would fall and spear down the slope into the road. If it wasn't broken when it was in the tree it sure was after they got it down. He would probably suggest this to be entered into 101 things to do with a G109. http://sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com/2016/09/10/glider-pilot-survives-crash-into -tree-on-interstate-80-in-placer-county/ Is this guy lucky or what. Reminds me of a scene in Air America where Mel Gibson releases his harness to drop to the ground to avoid being a sitting duck. I bet it never entered this guys mind. That is still a long way up.
