Macca,

The problem is that when the Dimona's prop is running with the wings folded
back, the wings swivel around their telescopic support rod and can end up with
the top leaning inward. When you open the canopy, the front edge of the wing
can catch inside the vent window on either side and the force of swinging the
canopy rearward can either crack the canopy forward of the window or completely
break a piece out.

The trap with all of this is that when the wings are folded back, the main wing
section sits behind the pilot and the spar is below the edge of the window.
While the engine is running, you have no idea that the wings are swiveling at
all.

But fair point. Never run the engine with the wings folded back is a VERY good
idea.

Cheers,

Greg Wilson

Owners run engine with wings folded back but at engine shut down the wing root
trailing edge rolls inward and knocks a corner out of canopy.

This is the second such repair I have done on h36. Years ago I was most
impressed with Ian Downes repairs on a canopy and got few extra tips from him
this morning.

This time I had to curve the hot perspex to curved shape as original part was
missing. 4 bolts were added to hold in place while I "welded" between bolts
with acrifix.  It is all masked off but I added a dam on the edge of V with
foil tape. Later I will remove bolts and penny washers and glue this part.
Naturally the canopy is as level as I can get it. I have overfilled the V so
later on grind off the high spot. I leave tape in place out from V and sand
level with course block. Then start with wet and dry then later onto micromesh
up to 10000 grain pad.  Then polish.

I may have to do a similar repair from the other (in) side but we will see.

The acriflix was new stock, warm and held tip down before use.

I have done reasonable repairs in past but hopefully this will be even better.
It does take a long time. It is much easier to think first before the crack
occurs. So never run engine with wings folded back.

Any suggestions out there are most welcome.

I do recommend using 3mm plastic
