Professor Kiat, describes how not all people who have
narrowed or blocked blood vessels in the heart need
heart surgery. In fact, less than 10% do. Most are
able to be safely treated with effective medication
and life style and risk factor modifications. For
those who have a more serious form of blocked blood
vessels in the heart, 80% can be fixed with balloon
angioplasty and stenting. A procedure which does not
need more than 1 day hospitalisation. Bypass surgery
is a highly complex procedure which Professor Kiat will review the
risks and benefits of.
