A related discussion that was brought up at FEniCS'10 is the choice of license. Currently, parts of FEniCS are licensed under GPL while others are LGPL. This does not really work out unless we add special exceptions. For example, the Python parts of DOLFIN (which are LGPL) depend on UFL and FFC which both are GPL and therefore DOLFIN would need to be GPL (at least the Python parts).
I think we should try to enforce a common license for all parts of FEniCS, either GPL or LGPL. We also need to update the licenses to say (L)GPL v 3 or any later version. -- Anders
