Well, do keep in mind that "fast enough" is quite relative. In my application field (full-wave electromagnetics) slowing down matrix assembly by a factor 10 will hardly cause a blip since CPU time is dominated by matrix solution. I for one would be quite happy with the performance you have demonstrated!
