Yes, it's already implemented (with HDF5 for the underlying data storage) in:
https://code.launchpad.net/~cam-fenics/dolfin/phdf5 It will be merged in the next few days. The above branch also has support for reading/writing Vectors, etc in parallel via HDF5. We've already seen in serial that the HDF5 io it can be >100 times faster than the XML format, and faster than the DOLFIN binary format.
