[dom4j-user] getTextTrim returns null

I am using the Element.getTextTrim method on an empty element (e.g. <xxxxx></xxxxx>) and it is returning a NULL value.   Is there a setting somewhere to have a non null return? Maybe a String with one space?   thanks, Edwin
