[dom4j-user] normalize doesn't work

Does anyone know what magic incantation I must utter to get 
normalization to work. I've tried calling the normalize() method on a 
Document, a Node, and an Element and it doesn't seem to do anything. 
Trying to remove all (non-element) whitespace in a document...
