Yes, I believe there will be new future versions, efforts are already
underway to migrate dom4j to Java 5.0 implementing generics and the
DOM Level 3 API.

However I don't think this should influence the decision to adopt
dom4j for your projects, the current 1.6.1 version is very mature and
stable and all existing issues have been well documented. There is
also a lot of literature available and these mailing-lists which
should help you with any questions you have.
