Dane: I spent a bit of time looking over the pretty printing features in JTidy, and I think that the simplest thing to do would be to simple adapt their code and produce a kind of XMLWriter that accepts a document and writes out files as they do.
I believe that the brackets are included in the estimates, etc. I'll try and take a stab at this later today if time permits since I started the whole issue; I'm really tired of scrolling to the right all the time when eyeballing my XML files.
