I brought this up because it seemed like something that should be able to work.
Err... yeah. It helps to write in comprehensible English :)
What I meant was that I brought this up because I didn't think that getParent() on the root node should throw a not supported exception, particularly if there is an easy solution.
That said, I must say that so far I'm quite happy with how easy it has been to plug dom4j into all of this code we've got.
