It might be very useful to have some benchmarks for these.

Maybe you could use the XPath comparison tests already created by 
Ryan Cox, a description of the tests and the test files can be found at:

Also shirasu hiroyuki has extended these tests and used them to 
compare xom and jdom, don't know why he left dom4j out:
