I believe that you could still have the same problem when the implementation of java.net.URI would be different between platforms.
I never really looked into the GNU Classpath project but knowing what I know now ... I don't believe per se that it is bad to fork the development of core Java modules but I believe it to be quite bad when the forked modules behave differently and since I don't know how you could avoid having different behaviour when forking these modules ...
