My 2 cents: I don't agree :-)
Most of my clients never download their own software. They never heard of Tucows or OpenSRS, and the only reason they would "trust" that brand is because I say it's trustworthy.
I'm currently also only using domain and certificate registration services from Tucows, but am very happy with an expanding portfolio of services that I can offer my clients as well, at competitive prices because I can partner with a bulk provider.
Maybe to scare you ;-) I wouldn't mind more "registration and messaging services" in the future, like SMS gateways, VoIP numbers, ... Having one place to manage that allows small guys like me to offer complete service portfolios to a relatively small number of clients at good quality, and be "technology solution provider".
(just to speak out as someone on the other end of the spectrum)
