The message you mentioned is what people get when they mistakenly pay the paper DRoA "IMPORTANT NOTICE". Is your client big enough that they have a separate accounts payable person/department? If so, I think you'll find that the person/department wrote DRoA a check, thinking it was for a renewal with their current registrar.
