I was the original proponent of that position - but that was before I
realized that taking such a position was spammer-bait. Call me naive.
We didn't take the position because it was economically advantageous to
do so, but because we (I) didn't want to be caught trying to figure out
the difference between pr0nography and erotica as defined by your local
law enforcement agency.
Things have changed and our policies are much different now. I was quite
surprised in reading the original post that we've still got this many
spammers hanging around. I did send around a message internally
indicating the downsides of "fostering" these types of customer
relationships to underscore that we're performing badly in this area.
We've got a pretty big investment in terms of customer abuse monitoring,
compliance, etc. I suspect that we need to work harder in the area of
coordination between these functions and enforcement of the outcomes. I
can say that we're not ignorant of the problem and its impacts though.
