Hello ,
I was going to stay quite on this one, but if you can stand
another list.....
This list , prefaced by a BIG imho, is shorter than ten, is
based upon my perception of artistic creativity and talent, and
excludes all Doobies' recordings :
In miscellaneous order , and will not change tomorrow :
Jeff Beck ----------Wired / Blow By Blow
Beach Boys-------Pet Sounds
Miles Davis--------Kind of Blue
Burt Bacharach---box set
Laura Nyro---------Best of Laura Nyro : Stoned Soul Picnic
( MANY famous bands were singing her
songs ! )
and last, but certainly not least, the sounds two of my
guitar and bass students recorded on a four track cassette recorder
then burned to cd---man, kids today have it good----of several Harley,
Ford Mustang, and other well-toned engines individually rev ving up.
And even some recorded in harmony !
Personally, my biggest influences besides the Doobies are
the melodies of Burt Bacharach sung by Dionne Warwick and the raw energy
of a big, throaty roaring engine. Carlos Santana is quoted as saying
he, when playing guitar, imagines himself as Dionne expressively singing
Burt's melodies but through his hands rather than mouth. An electric
rock guitar provides an unique opportunity for combining the two major
sonically emotional influences in my life---pure melody and well-toned
mechanical energy.
As for the list, Les Paul deserves mention for the
personal creativity of making it all possible----electric guitar,
recording equipment, and recording techniques. Truly the grandfather of
modern music. And a big THANK YOU to the uncommonly creative early
artists who provided excellent examples of the equipment's
possibilities.
