Thought you would all enjoy this.......
You never know when you are going to hear the Brothers !!!
Recently I had 3 experiences where when I least expected it, I heard the
sounds of the Doobie Brothers.
First.......I was riding in my car down US #1 in Jersey around midnight one
night. While listening to an FM radio station (can't remember which one), I
suddenly detect as background to a voice-over commercial for used cars, the
driving riffs of "Without You". In case the Band (Ed Ryan) is interested in
checking out whether these guys ever got permission to use the song as
background, the commercial was for "1-800 Autoland". I never really "heard"
what the voice-over was saying since I tuned him out and tuned in the Doobie
Brothers in the background.
Second.....While on a business trip to France, I was sitting in my hotel
room at the Airport Hilton after dinner on Valentine's Day night, and as is
the case with most of my trips there is very little on TV in English.
So...I begin to flip remote and I come across a film in Spanish with French
subtitles on the ARTE station. Not understanding either Spanish or French I
was just getting ready to switch the channel when a scene came on where a
couple enters a bar and the music (very clear by the way) in the background
starts up with the familiar lyrics, "Down around the corner, half a mile
from here...."!!!! Finally, there was something in English and the Doobie
Brothers no less. I watched the rest of the film for an hour not
understanding a word hoping another song came on but no luck. I think the
name of the film was..."Malena est un non de tango" ?? The credits listed
"Long Train Runnin'" with Thomas Charles Johnston as the "author".
Damn...that was so cool !!!!!!
Third......I am finally home from my trip and I put on the TV appreciating
the English language once again. Don't you think that within five minutes
of "dial surfing" I stop at the Discovery Channel which has a series
dedicated to emergency room and trauma centers which are real life
"situations". You know, sort of like cops but only in hospitals. This
night they had a gunshot victim and the ER physician on duty is going from
one patient to the next, is obviously overtired and makes a comment on the
way to the ER that he does whatever it takes to get him through the night.
As he walks off he is heard singing out loud the familiar words...."what the
people need is a way to make them smile. It ain't so hard to do if you
know how" .......fade to black.
Well......someone just posted a note saying that you will always hear
something from the Doobies whether it is the original or that awful Muzak
stuff in supermarkets, waiting rooms, elevators and hotel lobbies. It
always brings a smile to my face and a look of "curiosity" from the people
around me at the time because I inevitably sound out the words....."oh man,
it's the Doobie Brothers" and immediately begin to sing along. I can
imagine what they are thinking seeing this Doobie Brother-aged guy singing
out loud. They probably think I am getting flashbacks or something from my
college days in the late 60's early 70's but let's not go there !!!!!
Sorry this went so long but I am sure we all had similar experiences. I
just thought the Spanish flick thing was so weird followed by the Discovery
thing.
Can't wait for the next round of concerts.....trying to save those pennies
for Saratoga....and forever "listnin' to the music". Rock on Brothers and
Sisters.
