It was about 10:30 central time here in Houston when the phone rang. I had
done my usual channel surfing, looking for reruns of I Love Lucy and fell
asleep with the clicker in my hand. It rang twice. I ignored it.
"Probably for one of the kids, " I thought. Teenagers! Why don't their
parents give them a telephone curfew!? That is so aggrivating!! The phone
stopped ringing after the second ring and then there came a knock at the
bedroom door. My son, Jason handed me the phone and said, "I think you'd
better take this call. It's from Hawaii. Somebody named Pete Dubin?" I
grabbed the phone away from him more like a teenage sister than a mom and
greeted Pete in anticipation. Then a friendly, feminine voice with a
slightly midwestern accent said "Hi Gina! This is Cris Simmons!" I bubbled
a few bubbly words to her just like we were old friends. I had sent her a
pair of my handmade peacock feather earrings and of course one to Pat (the
one he never got 25 years ago) She thanked me graciously and then handed
over the phone to "someone I think you'll want to talk to..." I sat down on
bed. "Hello, Cinderella," the voice that sounded like Pat Simmons said.
"Ok Pete," I giggled, "this is not funny now stop it!" Th voice still
insisted he was Pat. I finally believed it. I never asked him to sing
Black Water or anything to prove it. (that would have been rude) I just knew
it was him.
You know those little sparkly things that float in the air when magic
happens in the Disney Movies? They seemed to be coming out of my phone as
we talked about the weather, our kids, the old fan club that was nothing
more than a business office and how many ear piercings we had. Then the
voice of the Master of Soothe said he had to go change his shirt and handed
the phone back over to Pete.
Was I sleepy dreamin there all covered and warm? No, I don't think so.
I've been touched by a Doobie.
Siggghhhhh,
And Huggs,
Cinderella
