Yeah, Thank You Love was real jazzed out tune - about as far away from the original sound as I think they got, but I really, really like it for its musicianship, its respect for the jazz ethic, and that fade-out at the end is just killer. It's like a Steely Dan fade-out in that the best part of the tune seems to be the stuff being played during the fade-out (anyone remember "Peg"?)

I've never heard a live version of that, and as far as I know, they never played a live version of it. Could be wrong...

Another great tune on that LP was Just In Time, a short but incredibly cool song in which Simmons' amazing vocal abilities were on full display. Too bad it didn't extend out at the end with Simmons/McFee geetar dual.

All in all, an underrated and misunderstood album. In my own humble opinion, it coulda used a lot more guitar and maybe toned down the synth a bit, but Mike and Pat seemed definitely at the peak of their abilities on that one.

Subject: One Step Closer

Hello everyone!

Syd Scott from UK here.

Thanks to all of you who passed on the info regards Cornelius's solo album. I am one step closer to purchasing it, and will hopefully acquire it tomorrow on import.

Thinking of Mr Bumpus made me revisit 'One Step Closer' again, particularly to hear Thank You Love. It brought back bittersweet memories - my brother bought me the LP for christmas that year, 'cos "times were hard and work was slow" for myself in 1980. Anyway, thanks for the memories and Mick (my brother), thanks for the best present ever!

Syd
