Greetings, Doobie Fans, from the foot of the Rocky Mountains.
We've got two large forest fires burning in the mountains near here. I can
see one from my office window in Denver, a huge blue-pink plume billowing
into the sky and streaming eastward across the Plains. You can smell the
smoke in the air.
Fire is not the only hot thing here these days. Last night, I had the
pleasure of hearing Michael McDonald play in Boulder (aka The People's
Republic of Boulder, or just BOCO), for a live taping of the radio show
"E-Town." The taping occurred at the Chatauqua auditorium, at the base of
Boulder's famous Flatirons (rock cliffs), in front of an audience of about
500. And it was hot!
Michael was the featured artist. He was respendant, with his long silver
hair shining, and his voice was in fine form. His wife, Amy, and guitarist,
Bernie Chiaravalle, were present and provided masterful accompanyment. Roy
Rogers and Shana Morrison were the other artists on the bill. The taping
consisted of interviews interspersed with performances. Michael and Amy
talked about moving to Nashville, being parents and the pressures of having
a public life, and home schooling.
Michael played a variety of songs from his career. He did a quirky, upbeat
version of "It keeps you runnin' ." "Where would I be now," from the new
album, was a thoughtful and poignant duet with Amy. And his rendition of
"Ain't that peculiar," also from the new album, was one hot rocker! I like
his ballads well enough, but I think he's especially great when he pulls out
the stops and roars!
The show will air on "E-Town" in about 6 weeks. Catch it if you can!
Dutifully reported by
Dave from Denver
