You know
it would be very easy to get VERY upset with Andy.
But People Gotta Love Again! So I won't. In fact, time was, I
felt just like he does.
When Takin' It To The Streets, and Fault Line came out, I felt all the
things that Andy articulated in his Email. That was then.
Since then, I've grown (musically, as well as around the waist) and
thanks to the DBFC getting me to take out the "Michael Albums" and give them
another listen, and thanks to a couple years in a garage band expanding my
musical horizons, I now enjoy Doobies music in all it's various forms and
sounds.
In 1976, I would have hated Ordinary Man and Don't Be Afraid.
Today, they are instant favorites. As are On Every Corner, and Gates
Of Eden. We simply haven't been used to hearing Keith sing, and on top
of that a lot of the harmonies and backing vocals are different from what
we've heard before.
Is Sibling Rivalry different? You bet! But a collective group
of talent such as the Brothers can't stagnate. They have to grow, and
evolve, and explore. To do anything else would be a waste of those
amazing talents.
So, Andy, I guess we just disagree. Doesn't make you a bad person,
or a disloyal Doobs fan. We just hear things with different
ears. All I will ask of you is that you listen to the album - really
listen, without distraction, at least five times.
Just a week ago I got the new Al Stewart CD. (OK, so I like hard driving
R&R, and Al Stewart too, hey variety is the spice of life!) The
first listen was like "What in the world is this?!" Over the last week
I've listened to it many times. I love every song, and know the words
to most of them by heart now.
Give it a chance to grow on you. Let the music get into your
soul. If you still don't like it, it's OK. We all see, and hear
things our own way.
