Steve,

Syd Scott here, twice in a week!! (a record?)

I am putting this on the list in response to David's (Noe) mail. While I
agree with some of what my learned friend Scooter has to say, I too have all
Michael's stuff (inc. Rock & Soul Revue) and suggest that they are all worth
a visit. The first album (If That's What It Takes) more or less continues in
the same vein as the stuff the Doobies were doing when they split, anyone
who is not moved by 'I Can Let Go Now' must be de-sensitised. The new album
is very good, though I do feel that it misses the touch of his very good
friend/collaborator Chuck Sabatino (deceased). Neil Young's 'Down By The
River' is awsome!
'No Looking Back' is synthesiser based but worthwhile, although it has moved
significantly away from the Doobies 77-80 sound. Contains the song used in
the Kim Basinger/Richard Gere film (forgot title) 'Our Love'.
My recommendation, however is (If you can track it down), 'Sweet Freedom-
the best of Michael MacDonald'.
I believe this is a UK only release and was issued in 1986. It covers stuff
from his solo albums up to that point as well as the 'one off' duet singles,
Ya Mo Be There, Sweet Freedom, On My Own and the mighty I Can Let Go Now!.
Also included is What A Fool Believes, a minor hit again here to cash in on
Michael's populartity at the time.
He did visit the UK on many occasions between 1987-90 and I had the pleasure
of seeing a lot of these shows. I just wish the Doobies would come over and
play some of the same venues!
Re: Rock & Soul Revue - an excellent show, which was the brain child of
Donald Fagen. Michael sings outstanding versions of 'Lonely Teardrops' and
'Minute by Minute'. He assists on background vocals on many tracks. Album
includes such luminaries as Phoebe Snow, Boz Scaggs and more.

Hope this helps,

Syd
