Since there has been so much fuss over how little Doobie content there
has been on this list lately, I've decided to pull out something that
many of you may have not heard about before.
Back in August of 1997, I transcribed an audio cassette of an interview
with the Doobie Brothers that I recorded back in '74 and posted the
entire interview to this list over a period of two weeks. Seems like now
would be a good time to post it again since we're hurting for Doobie material.
Here's the first installment from "The Sunday Stereo Special" radio
interview with Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons from 1974. JIM LADD was the
Host of the show, which aired in Chicago on WDAI-FM. I don't know if it
ever aired nationally or if any other tape besides mine exists anywhere.
I may have the ONLY copy of this show. :)
Over the next two weeks, I'll post a different excerpt from the show
each day. You're in for a treat because there's some great stuff on this
tape from our friends Pat and Tommy from that magical year of 1974.
First, a little background on how this tape came to be. Back in '74 when
I was just 14 yrs. old, I had discovered FM radio which introduced me to
the Doobie Brothers. I was hooked big time. When I heard there was going
to be an interview with the Doobie Brothers on the radio, well I
canceled all my plans and made sure not to miss this show. I wanted to
find out just who these guys were that made such wonderful music.
All I had back then was a little audio cassette recorder and a
microphone. I borrowed my Dad's portable radio, went to my room and told
my brothers to KEEP OUT and locked the door. You see, I had to record
this show with a microphone and I sure didn't want any noise to get
picked up on the recording.
I've held onto this cassette for 27 years! Amazing, but true. I've
carefully transcribed it word-for-word for you all to "hear" as a gift
from me to you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

"Tom Johnston got busted a while ago. He had half a doobie in his
pocket. From that both the straight and the so called "hip press", had a
field day. Now I'm not quite sure what it is, but something happens
whenever the combination of a frustrated rock 'n' roll reporter and a
typewriter merge together".
"As a member of the electronic media it makes my job much harder
whenever one of these 'jerks' gets bored with merely printing news and
tries for one more rung on the editors ladder at the expense of an
artist. So forgive me people of print, those of you who are involved,
but I have a brand new idea. Why not let TOM JOHNSTON tell his own
story. After all he was there wasn't he? It may not be as sensational,
but then it's only the truth."
