Hi Gang!!
Well, I picked up the "Pickin' On The Doobie Brothers" CD today...I
really like it!!! Some really neat versions of our fave tunes!!! Some are a
heck-of-a-lot more recognizable than others..there is one in particular
that, well, let me just say "Take Me In Your Arms"...if they hadn't said
that was the title of the song...I would've NEVER even come close to
identifying it as that song!!!!! In my opinion, "Takin' It To The Streets"
and "Real Love" are exceptionally neat versions 'cause the familiar riffs we
know and love on Michael McDonald's keyboards, are done on accoustic
guitars!!! Kinda cool!!!
Now...I had a little trouble finding the CD in the music store...It wasn't
in with The Doobies "slot" in popular music...so I checked out the Bluegrass
section, It wasn't there either(it ended up being in the country section
under P, for Pickin'!!) BUT>..I did however run across something else that
caught my eye, in the bluegras section!! A CD by John Cowen...I first
became aware of John Cowen when he was in a group called, "New Grass
Revival" I saw them on some country music awards show back in the late
80's. John played bass guitar and did most of the lead singing...He has an
EXCELLENT voice!!!!!
That group broke up, but I saw him again when I saw The Doobie Brothers
"live", in 1993...A group in which he sang and played bass, opened up for
the Doobies, the group also featured Pat Simmons, and keyboardist Dale
Ockerman from the Doobies!! At one point they said they didn't have a name
yet but were concidering "Four Wheel Drive". Then when the Doobs came on,
John Cowen was playing bass for them!! Well, He ended up being the Doobies'
bass player for that tour as well as the 1994 tour!!
Later, that opening band, minus Pat & Dale, but WITH John Cowen, changed
the name to "The Sky Kings" and were set to put out a CD, but somewhere
along the line, the CD never got released. I know alot of you already knew
some of this info, because I've seen emails about The Sky Kings, recently in
fact!
But this CD by John Cowen is really good! The only song on it, that I
have seen as a Sky Kings song, is one called "Wichita Way", the rest of them
I had not heard of before! I highly recomend it!!!
It's simply called "John Cowen" no other title, it's on Sugar Hill
records(CD's), it's a 2000 release, I can even provide the catolgue
number:SUG-CD-3907. It's not really what I would concider "bluegrass" music,
it's a mix of different styles on the songs.
As a last point, there's a nice thing in the "Special thanks", in the
liner notes, saying thanks to,"The Brothers Doobie & families"!!
Check it out!!
Ta-Ta,
Bruce
DOOBIES FOREVER!!!
Let's "Keep This Train A-Rollin'"!!!
