Some guys have all the luck. Great story, Rick! Hell of a lot more fun to
read about than some friggin' bogus Christmas tree.

Sometimes fate steps in and puts you right where you're supposed to be.
Last night that happened to me! I was called at the last minute to work
for the NBC affiliate in San Francisco to cover the California Music
Awards. It turns out they needed a camera operator to shoot interviews
with the winners at the awards show.

Luckily I was available so I quickly picked up the camera gear and
headed to Oakland. As I picked up my media pass backstage, I found out
several members of the Doobie Brothers would be at the show! Oh there
were others, like the host of the show, Huey Lewis and Carlos Santana
and Green Day and a few other small-time acts, but the DOOBIE BROTHERS
would be there and that's all that really mattered! :)

We interviewed many stars backstage after they picked up their awards.
Sammy Hagar, who was a bit more down-to-earth than you would think,
members of Green Day, who made fools of themselves and gave us unusable
sound bites and many other stars and star hopefuls...

But the best part was when I saw Keith Knudsen backstage. I quickly ran
and grabbed him and introduced him to the producers. He did an interview
and he was great! While everyone else was doing the typical, "How does
it feel to win?" questions, we were asking off-the-wall things like
"Since you're from California, can you tell us the California State
dance?". (Answer: swing). And then Jill, the gal doing the interviews,
coaxed Keith into singing "Listen to the Music" with her. It was so fun!

Then I saw Tommy and I grabbed him for an interview. When asked what the
California state song was he guessed at "California Here I come". He was
wrong, but we didn't expect anyone to know... It was "I Love You
California".

But he was a great sport and laughed at our silly jokes and sang along
with Jill to "Listen to the Music". The producers all agreed that Tommy
had a lot of class. He gave us a great interview.

I saw Michael Hossack later, but I couldn't get to him because I was
busy shooting other interviews when I saw him. I did bump into Bruce
Cohn and was able to talk a bit with him. He was as friendly as ever and
was happy to be there. We both laughed at how hard he's working the
Doobie's lately. He said he's keeping them busy and booking them as
often as possible. There will be some interesting appearances coming
up... Nothing set in stone so I can't comment.

The final song of the night was, of course, "Listen to the Music". Tommy
led the all-star-band as they did a rockin' version with everyone
singing along. I was stuck backstage shooting yet another interview
during this, but I could see it on the monitors and Tommy looked great!
Both Tommy and Keith were also interviewed on the radio last night.

It was an incredible night and I was lucky to be there! It's always
great to see the Doobie's and even better when they recognize me! ;) I
showed Keith my Doobie denim jacket and he hollered to Tommy and held it
up for him to see. Tommy gave a thumbs up from across the room!

For more info on the show, take a look here, but I don't think it's been
updated with the winners yet. Unfortunately, The doobie's weren't up for
any awards.

Those in the Bay Area can see the segment on the awards on Bay-TV this
Wednesday.

I believe the entire show will be broadcast on KTVU in a couple of
weeks. I'll let you know when and if it airs here in the Bay Area.
