I second the WS2812B / Teensy 3.1 combination.  OctoWS2811 is a great
library and it works very well.  Also agree about Ray Wu on AliExpress,
I've bought a fair amount of LED strip from him and never had problems.
 There's a new style available, silicone tubing filled with silicone epoxy.
 It flexes nicely and seems to protect the LEDs well.  It's overkill for
this project, but if you're going to reuse the strips it might be nice to
have the extra robustness.  I've always wanted to try PEX tubing as a
diffuser, I bit it would work reasonably well.  This is the link I used to

I have a reel of it here if you want to take a look before buying.  One
thought for configurability: add a Roving Networks RN42 Bluetooth Serial
module to the Teensy.  It looks and acts like a wireless UART, and would
allow you to use a tablet or phone to change the LED pattern on the fly
without having to dig into the controller.
