I'm surprised you have to mess with this at all.  I'm using pretty much
the same setup - the arduino/arduino-core pkgs and their dependences, and
ubuntu 12.4 (32 bit) - and all I do is select the proper serial port via
"Tools>Serial Port" menu.  I've even done so using cu(1), a crusty old
command-line program from the UUCP days.
