The big problem is the monopolistic power of the cable company. The burbs
at least have the FiOS option. The incumbents have their fingers around
your throat and can squeeze as needed to establish prices and advantages
they want. The us congress and the FCC have established this regime. Except
for some occasional window dressing, the incumbents own the FCC and
congress. The only likely way out is where the users own the last mile
infrastructure.

On the issue of what is adequate bandwidth, there really is no excuse for
the limits we see today. There are applications that need it. The
technology is and has been available. We don't see it for incumbent
business reasons, maintaining scarcity (which dissuaded sharing) and price
leverage.
