Sometimes you can find an actual lawyer who'll discuss this stuff with
you during an initial consult, for free.  I do it myself.  (However, if
you want Legal Advice, you have to hire me for it -- I'm paying for the
malpractice insurance that reimburses you if my advice is horribly
wrong, and that policy ain't cheap!)

The thing that makes it Legal Advice is if it's based on your specific
circumstances, rather than just general information.  "How does the
patent system work?"  I'm happy to tell you -- the more you know, the
better you can decide for yourself what to do.   "Do I think you should
apply for a patent on invention X when your startup budget is $Y and
your time to market is Z months?"  That's legal advice.

(So is:

... but I'm not the practicing-law-without-a-license police.)
