The Hackster.io hardware hackathon I attended was advertised in much the
same way. I thought it would be messing around with hardware bits similar
to this list. But was actually a bit more like a Startup Weekend
http://startupweekend.org/

Pitch ideas (30 seconds)
Form teams around popular ideas
Build something
Demonstrate results

Judging criteria included: does it have hardware that works? does it have
cool software interface? does it successfully connect to the cloud? Is it
cool? Is it sellable?

Prizes: $500 cash in 3 categories. Note that Startup Weekend just gives
winners startup stuff, like AWS credits, some time with a lawyer to set up
a corporation, a seat at a startup co-workspace. Nothing of value if you
aren't starting a company. Let me repeat: cold, hard, cash prizes at the
hardware hackathon.

Someone should check to see if this is indeed that same format.
Act accordingly per your personal goals and interests.
